In 1896, the 5 Johns of Hamilton came up with an idea to use Nikola Tesla’s “alternating current (AC) polyphase system of generators, transformers and motors” to produce hydro at Decew Falls, St Catharines and ship it over a 35-mile power transmission line to Hamilton. There were a lot of concerns, as this was new technology, used to transmit power from Niagara Falls NY to Buffalo.
They consulted with and received Nikola Tesla’s approval on their plans. The “Power was tuned on in Hamilton” on August 25, 1898. The City of Hamilton was the first major city in Canada to have AC electricity and soon became to be known as “The Electric City. “ Electricity propelled Hamilton into a major industrial city in Canada.
